Auto Apps We Love

Americans spend an astounding 300 hours in the car every year, According to AAA.  Each model year, automobiles become more connected with advanced infotainment systems.  Interestingly, Salt Lake City is a model city nationwide for traffic congestion reduction.  This year, traffic is reported to be 2% less congested even though our area population is booming.  What this means in practical terms is this: in 2018, area drivers spent 19% of their driving time stuck in traffic.  This year, drivers only spend 17% of their driving time stuck in traffic.  We all know, though, when you are on your way to an important event or even just home after work, even 17% of the time can seem like forever.  Here are some apps that might make your traffic time more enjoyable in the Salt Lake City Metro area.

Gas Buddy

Gas Buddy is an easy app to love.  With features such as Never Pay Full Price at The Pump and Find the Best Gas Price or Save at The Pump by Always Knowing What Station Has The Cheapest Price…you can gain the benefits from using this app almost immediately.  GasBuddy allows you to save at the pump by always keeping you in-the-know about which station has the lowest price.  You can use this app all over the U.S. and gas prices are updated in real-time.  As if that isn’t enough to sell you on this powerhouse FREE app, users can also save additional money on gas by using the app’s GasBack feature.  The app comes with an optional debit card offering savings for any shopping you do inside the app from a variety of top retailers.  If you are willing to make your purchases with that card, you will save $0.10 per gallon on your first fill and $0.05 per gallon for every fill-up after that.  You can also earn cashback by shopping a variety of online retailer sites from within the app.

Waze

Waze is so much more than just a navigational, direction-providing appl.  With Waze, you can always know what is happening on the road.  This may not seem significant in rural or suburban areas, but it can be invaluable in urban and metropolitan areas.  The app will also alert you to police presence and potential hazards as reported by other users.  You can listen to your favorite music through your chosen app and podcasts too, without having to switch apps.

Cars.com

This free app can help you find the best deal with access to almost 5 million listings.  The app offers a variety of search filters to help you find exactly the car of your dreams!  In addition to returning a list of vehicles applicable to your filters, you can also read comparisons and reviews.  You can obtain price comparison reports, save your favorites and also get a sense of the popularity of a particular listing with deal badging.  You can also sell your car using the app with the easy to follow instructions to post the listing yourself.

Turo

This app is like Airbnb for cars.  The app’s tagline is “Better than Car Rental”.  Turo is a peer-to-peer car sharing marketplace where you can book any car you want, wherever you want it, from local hosts across the US, Canada, the UK, and Germany. A vibrant community over five million strong, Turo guests can choose from over 850 unique makes and models, while hosts earn extra money to offset the costs of car ownership.

Whether it’s a truck to help on moving day, a Mercedes-Benz for a luxurious weekend away, or a classic VW bus for a picture-perfect road trip, with more than 200,000 vehicles listed worldwide, Turo lets you find the perfect vehicle for your next adventure.

MMGuardian

This is the perfect app for parents with a new teen driver.  This app allows the parent to monitor the teen driver (with the app installed on both smartphones).  The app can locate the teen and monitor driving behavior and so much more outside of the driving arena.  The parent can track SMS/text and pictures, detect sexting, drugs, cyberbullying, suicidal thoughts.  The parent app can also set screen time limits, block apps, filter web activity and manage the child’s phone remotely.  The intention of the app is not to spy but to keep kids safe.  This app can actually start the conversation with young people about safe behavior, both driving and non-driving behavior.
